Ever opened your task manager, stared at the massive wall of overdue items, felt a familiar pit in your stomach, and immediately closed the app?

We’ve all been there. When the backlog gets too heavy, our instinct isn't to plan or prioritize. Our instinct is to hide. We convince ourselves that if we don't look at the mountain of work, it doesn't exist—at least for the next hour or two.

But that avoidance just breeds a different kind of anxiety. You aren't actually resting when you ghost your to-do list; you're just hovering in a state of productive paralysis, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Bite-sized knowledge

The Ostrich Effect.

In behavioral psychology, the "Ostrich Effect" is a cognitive bias that causes us to avoid information we perceive as negative, stressful, or overwhelming.

Just like ignoring a credit card statement after an expensive vacation, we avoid our task lists when we feel like we are over capacity. Your brain is literally trying to protect you from the stress of the backlog. The problem is, ignoring the list doesn't shrink it.

Give this a try

Practice Visual Silencing.

Instead of staring at your master to-do list, shrink your digital window. Collapse all tabs you aren't actively working on.

Give yourself permission to only look at what matters today.
