We 'gained' an hour over the weekend which means we now get to say goodbye to the sun a few hours after lunch. Yippee. What we don't always clock (no pun intended) is the change in our energy levels because of this shift.

We assume, writ large, as a work culture, that we should be firing on all cylinders 24/7, 365. But when you take the smallest step back, you realize, as a species, we're wired differently. We're animals who abide by our natural circadian rhythm that's so closely linked to the sun and light exposure. Cutting that light down means cutting out hours of a vital natural energy source.

Not to mention all the other joys that come with winter: the cold, the pressures of goals not yet accomplished for the year, potential contentious family gatherings on the horizon. This is all to say: if you're feeling a bit drained, a bit lacking in the energy department, you're not alone.

Bite-sized knowledge

The beat of our Circadian Rhythm

You've likely heard about circadian rhythm but just in case, it's "... your body's natural 24-hour internal clock that controls physical, mental, and behavioral processes".

We often think about it in smaller cycles (a few sleepless nights, wonky schedules, etc), but if not focused on during these seasonal changes, the rhythm can skip a beat so to speak and affect almost everything in your life.

Give this a try

The Winter Grace Period

This week, give yourself 15% grace on your task list. If you normally get 6 tasks done a day, feel fulfilled with 5 a day.

It also helps to frontload cognitive heavy tasks and leave easier ones for later in the afternoon.
