We created Onward because we were completely burnt out. We were trapped in a productivity loop so seductive, we didn't even realize we were under a spell. Every crossed-off task delivered a minuscule dopamine hit, promising that if we just worked a little bit more today, we would finally earn the peace tomorrow.

But of course, that never came. When we finally forced ourselves to stop, the adrenaline faded and it all came crashing down. We felt the profound fatigue we had been punting to next week. The sleep debt was past due and ready to be collected.

We realized that sometimes, the hardest task on your list is simply stopping. Breaking the chain is a feat of strength. Choosing to rest in the middle of unfinished work is an act of bravery.

Bite-sized knowledge

Avoidance Through Productivity.

There's a pattern in high-achievers that psychologists call "avoidance through productivity". It's based in the (very) real feeling of being in control when you're ticking off tasks on your list. The dopamine (as mentioned above) creates this loop that tells our brain working = relief.

Eventually, slowing down starts to feel scary and logging off with tasks still to do triggers a mini panic attack.

Give this a try

Simply notice your responses to stress.

When you get a spike of anxiety around work, do you reach for the easiest task to cross off? Maybe take some deep breaths before jumping to find that small act of control.
