How often do we talk ourselves out of being kind? Common thoughts that follow a generous impulse might be: "That's extra" or "They'll think I'm trying to get something from them" or even, simply "I'll feel embarrassed."

My kindest cousin once told me something that stuck when I mentioned wanting to text someone something kind but felt embarrassed. He said, "Is it out of real kindness? Then do it." I was reminded of this sentiment when reading BE 2.0 by Jim Collins and Bill Lazier.

Bill famously told Jim, "Never stifle a generous impulse." But we can take it a step forward: do it right when you have the thought. Don't put it on your to-do list or wait until you're done with your spreadsheet. Do it right then.

Bite-sized knowledge

A bigger boost for the giver.

This may not be entirely surprising to anyone who has given the perfect gift to a loved one, but it's often the giver who gets a bigger dopamine boost than the receiver.

Several studies1 have shown that giving something, particularly when it involves spending money on others, feels better than getting something for yourself.

Give this a try

The 60-Second Rule.

If you have a generous impulse (a compliment, an introduction, a quick thank you) that takes less than 60 seconds to execute, you are not allowed to schedule it. You must do it immediately.
