Raise your hand if this has happened to you in the last month: You hobbled to the finish line of the day, exhausted, feeling like you accomplished something (you must have) but are unclear as to what that accomplishment actually was.

We can take a pretty educated guess where that day started: immediately jumping into your overflowing inbox, triaging your Slack, etc. etc. You were on the defense from minute one—reacting to other people's priorities. The day was owning you.

But what happens when you take that ownership back? What does owning the day look like? We're not talking about waking up at 4am, doing cold plunges, and binging Diary of a CEO on YouTube.

Owning your day means working with deep intention. It means you decide what gets your attention, you decide how much capacity you have to give, and you decide when the day is over.

Bite-sized knowledge

Locus of Control

In personality psychology, your "Locus of Control" is how much you believe you dictate the events in your life. People with an External Locus of Control feel they are at the mercy of outside forces (like a boss, an inbox, or Slack pings) and are highly susceptible to burnout and helplessness.

The inverse is the Internal Locus of Control. People with an Internal Locus of Control believe their own actions determine their outcomes.

Give this a try

Draw the line of control.

Visually separate your tasks into 2 buckets: Tasks you can control and tasks that are dependent on other people.

Focus on what you can control.
